Our English Mastiff, Nelly, was with us for @twelve years and 7 months. If not for osteosarcoma, she would stayed with us longer. In 2013, she was given to me as a surprise gift (an incredible gift) on my birthday. Smart, stubborn, and a guard dog, Nelly was an amazing protector and took her job seriously sitting at the highest places on our property and surveilling it all. In the early days, I was dragged across the dirt road a number of times as she tried to “introduce” herself to other dogs and people. She always wanted them to know who was boss.
Nelly came from a home in the North East Kingdom of Vermont. She loved people and, once introduced, liked to play with other dogs. She was big sister to Sydlee. Sydlee would always follow Nelly’s lead and now Sydlee has to learn to be by herself. Nelly allowed our cat, Diego, to be the boss of the house when he was alive. Nelly loved walking through the woods, sitting in her swimming pool, and walking along the lake edge startling frogs. She made snow angels and loved rolling in the snow.
Nelly is missed so much. The pit in my stomach remains; however, we feel lucky to have had Dr. Caroline Horn and her lovely and caring team. Paige contacted me at least weekly. We worked together on creating a medication regime to reduce Nelly’s pain and give her more quality time with us. Although it was not long enough, we are grateful that she was in our life and that Dr. Horn’s team helped us all. I am thankful for the compassionate care given Nelly and us.
